Bernard Donnelly, a dragoon stationed at Castlebar caused serious disturbances in Castlebar on Christmas eve-day 1767. Detained by magistrates, he was liberated by several knife wielding Castlebar women, Donnelly went on the run. Three women were imprisoned in the County Gaol at Castlebar (Ellison St-Castle St. Junction). The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland issued a Proclamation offering a reward for Donnelly's capture.
